83rd session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
October 20, 2022
In Geneva, on 19 October, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women concluded its consideration of the 9th periodic report of Ukraine. The Committee thanked Ukraine’s delegation for the constructive dialogue with the Committee at the time of Russia’s genocidal armed aggression against Ukraine. The Experts commended Ukraine on the measures it had taken to advance gender equality in the last years, such as the approval of the State Strategy on Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men until 2030, the establishment of mandatory gender quotas for electoral lists, and the relevant legislative changes. The dialogue covered the questions about rape being used as a tool of war and how Ukraine was addressing conflict-based sexual violence, human trafficking, challenges faced by internally displaced persons, majority of whom are women, access to education in light of war and destruction of educational institutions, number of women holding high-level positions in politics, administration, defense and private sectors, and other important issues.
Dr Kateryna Bondar, WFUWO’s Main Representative to the UN Geneva, attended the session and met with Dr Kateryna Levchenko, Ukraine Government Commissioner for Gender Equality Policy and other members of Ukraine’s delegation. Kateryna Dashevska, WFUWO’s Additional Representative, attended the briefing of civil society organisations on the situation of women in Ukraine.
