March 15, 2024

NGO CSW FORUM Parallel Event | 68th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women

On March 14, 2024, amidst the 68th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the NGO CSW FORUM Parallel Event convened to address pressing concerns arising from the ongoing war in Ukraine. The devastation inflicted upon the environment, coupled with the destruction of critical infrastructure, cast a long shadow over the nation’s journey towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the broader global agenda for transitioning to a Green Economy.

In light of these challenges, the event, organized by the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO), in collaboration with co-sponsors such as the Ukrainian Women in Switzerland Association, Ukrainian Women’s Fund, La Strada, and Ukrainian Women’s Initiative in UAE, focused on:

GREEN AND GENDER EQUITABLE: Recommendations for Ukraine’s Post-War Recovery

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine had documented over 3,800 instances of environmental threats, encompassing issues ranging from air and soil pollution to water contamination and loss of biodiversity, as of February 15, 2024. The catastrophic breach of the Kakhovka dam in June 2023 had further compounded these challenges, with estimated losses exceeding 57 billion euros.

The event provided a platform for discussions aimed at formulating recommendations to guide Ukraine’s post-war recovery efforts, with a specific emphasis on green and gender-equitable strategies. Through collaborative efforts and insights from international experts, the event sought to address the intersecting dimensions of environmental sustainability and gender equality in rebuilding Ukraine’s future.
